Media Face Challenges in Maintaining “The Wall”

Media Face Challenges in Maintaining “The Wall”      [Case Study 8]

Advertising is the primary source of revenue for nearly all media companies. Because advertising pays the bills, newspaper and magazine publishers, as well as TV and radio networks and their station executives, must keep their advertisers happy.  Some called this a task not unlike feeding crocodiles as the inherent danger is that advertisers might use their economic influence to act as unofficial censors of the media and discourage them from publishing or broadcasting certain material. Television is not the only medium that must deal with the threats of advertiser defection or attempts to influence its content. Advertisers can also influence the editorial content of magazines and newspaper by pressuring them to run only positive stories about their products and services.

Then, Most magazines and newspaper publishers insist they do not allow advertiser pressure to influence their editorial content. They argue that they have long regarded the formal separation of their news and business departments as essential to their independence and credibility. This separation is often referred to as “The Wall” and is often spoken with a mixture of reverence and trepidation. Many magazine and newspaper have traditionally discouraged employees on the publishing side, including advertising, circulation, and other business departments, from interacting with those on the editorial side who write and edit the articles. This can be done by separating editorial and advertising offices, barring the sales force from reading articles before they are printed, and prohibiting editorial employees from participating in advertising sales calls.

Finally, Magazines and newspaper are still very much concerned over maintaining the concept of The Wall and ensuring that decisions on the writing, editing, and publishing of stories are made on journalistic merit rather than on whether they will attract or repel advertisers. Some executives defend the advertisers, noting that they have the right to spend their money the way they want to, which may include avoiding advertising in media that are critical of them.

Quiet Please, the Commercials Are Coming On!

Quiet Please, the Commercials Are Coming On!  [Case Study 10]

Nowadays, commercial on TV or internet are one part of our life. A company called Automated Media Services is working on a system to bring television to retail environments. In other words, expect to start seeing mini video displays near the toilet paper, dish washing detergent, and milk, angling for your attention, and your hard-earned dollars. For persuaded consumers to buy their products.

The Super Bowl different from other television event in three ways. First, it’s the most expensive advertising buy in television. Second, it delivers largest viewing audience of any televised program. Third, it’s the only television event in which millions of consumers actually look forward to seeing the commercials.

A survey reported the consumers’ reasons for watching the Super Bowl is watching the games, watching the ads, or spending time with friends and family. After that, Super Bowl discovered there were more instant replays of the commercials then of the game itself. This sort of viewing environment is where leads advertisers to spend so much money for so little time.

The benefits of advertising during the Super Bowl extend well beyond the numbers reached and their level of involvement with the commercials. Other activity or the buzz was created by Super Bowl commercials is other benefit..

Marketers head to China

Marketers head to China [Case Study 7]

For many year marketers could only dream to selling their product to China’s consumer because they became one of the fastest-growing consumer markets in the world. Advertising is now encouraged consumption by the Chinese government as well as helping educate consumer and business leader, which view it as a catalyst that can accelerate China’s economic development. The growth of advertising in China is the tremendous economic growth of the country. There is a new spirit of consumption, as reform in China has brought about dramatic increases in the purchasing power and size of the middle class.

Then, The newly emerging middle class in China is very brand conscious, and demand for popular Western product as well as goods from Japan and Korea is increase because they mean one thing to Chinese consumer: status. Chinese companies competed on the basis of price, but trying to move away from the low end of the market by developing higher-end products with more brand equity. One company that has been extremely successful in marketing its product in China is Nike, which is regarded as the coolest brand among young consumer in the country. Nike’s IMC strategy for China involved building brand awareness and recognition. This was done by outfitting top Chinese athletes and sponsoring the Chinese activity and celebration. Such clever marketing tactics have helped make Nike the icon for the new China. Nike promoted the right sports and launched a series of inspired advertising campaigns. Nike uses the famous athlete such as Michael Jordan and Yao Ming, Chinese hoopster as their presenter because Nike knows what is Chinese proud.

Finally, A number of other companies are also taking advantage of the growing interest in sports and fitness, particularly among China’s urban professionals who are turning to leisure-time sports to stay fit as they work longer hours and face more stress. The best alternative is worked with the Chinese government for the flow of performance. Multinational companies recognize that the enormous size of the Chinese market, along with the strong economic development and growth, make it imperative for them to be there.

Promoting the News or Deceptive Advertising?

Video News Releases: Promoting the News or Deceptive Advertising?
[Case Study 6]

A video news release (VNR) is a video segment created by PR firm, advertising agency, marketing firm, corporation, or government agency and provided to television news stations for the purpose of informing, shaping public opinion, or to promote and publicize individuals, commercial products and services, or other interests. VNR walked a thin between news and advertising

In the VNR a PR professional posed as a journalist and used broadcast commentator as a journalist. Because the public relations professional was not identified, democrats cried foul, calling the VNR is covert advertising, fake news, and other not so nice things. FCC issued a directive that broadcasters must clearly disclose the nature, source, and sponsorship of VNR. But not everyone is happy about the new disclosure requirements. Many nonprofits and major marketers also use VNR to get their stories told.

The most popular news source frequently air VNRs without disclosure to viewers, without conducting their own reporting, and even without fact checking the claims made in the VNRs. VNRs are overwhelmingly produced for corporations, as part of larger public relations campaigns to sell products, burnish their image, or promote policies or actions beneficial to the corporation.

FCC still need a full disclosure outweighed the potential risks associated with increase restriction. The existing federal laws and regulations coupled with self- enforcement and ethical standards will ensure that disclosure take place in the future. And some believe labeling has gone too far because people need to judge for themselves how much information they need.
